Rowing - summer 2020

The rain has ceased up for a few hours.
After almost a month and a half of no precipitation - it came heavy, strong and persistent.
A window of opportunity to get out and see the Ria has come; its labour never stops and a seemingly endless procession of fishermans' boats seeps out the harbour and explores.
In the distance the smacking of a jet ski can be heard as its hull batters the waves.
Towards the other side of the bay are the currently empty beaches of A Illa Carreiron Nature Reserve; their sands are golden even through the dull hazy cloud that is slowly enveloping the headland.

The grey green waves lap against the shoreline and nobody is around; a brief moment arrives so I lower my face mask to enjoy the sensation of the wind on my cheeks. Here, in Spain, the mask must be worn at all times; only removed at the moment of consumption- eating and drinking. I have witnessed fines being given out to those who think they are exempt without the doctor's note.
Yesterday, a protest took place in Madrid, where the cases are skyrocketing; hundreds of manifestants who claim we are controlled by the media into wearing masks. They remove them and spit in the journalists faces.

Whilst the bars and restaurants and playgrounds remain open, new laws have appeared as well as the mandatory face mask: smoking is now banned in the public domain and last orders are at midnight (which is the equivalent of a 9pm curfew in the UK... Or even earlier since most Spaniards don't even eat until 10:30pm...).
The clouds are gathering and it's about to rain again - and just then the roar of a sternman appears as a conoe leaves the "Mecos" Boathouse and slices through the water and across the Ria.

Row!
